A successful trial informing the National Assistive Technology Loans Scheme
The Assistive Technology Loans Scheme Trial (the trial) was delivered in partnership between NSW Health (EnableNSW) and the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
The 12-month trial leveraged EnableNSW’s existing infrastructure and expertise to test loaning assistive technology (AT) to older Australians.
The trial was open to eligible Home Care Package Program and Short-Term Restorative Care Programme recipients who live in South West Sydney or Riverina/Murray aged care planning regions. Almost 1,000 people were assisted during the trial.
The trial demonstrated:
- Improved access to essential AT keeps people safe at home, with health practitioners reporting a reduction in hospital admissions and falls.
- A streamlined process for clinicians allows for faster access to equipment and an enhanced patient experience.
The trial also provided valuable insights to help shape the design and implementation of the National Assistive Technology Loans Scheme.
Background information
The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (the Department) is implementing the Support at Home program in response to Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
Under this new program, the Department is designing a National Assistive Technology Loans Scheme to support fast and equitable access to assistive technology through a nationally coordinated equipment loans program.
