Application process

Browse the Assistive Technology (AT) Loans Scheme Equipment Catalogue to view over 250 communication, mobility, and self-care items. Each listed equipment will include a description and SKUID number. See below the table for a step by step guide to completing an application.

Most equipment is readily available. Please see detailed description below of the three AT categories available.

  • Standard range of mobility and self-care equipment; including height adjustable beds, pressure care mattresses, bathing and toileting aids, transfer aids, slings, pressure cushions, off the shelf power wheelchairs, off the shelf manual wheelchairs, pressure care cushions and walking frames
  • Some items may be adjusted
  • Available for immediate delivery
  • Includes a range of products that are only provided when multiple items are requested in the one application
  • For off the shelf power wheelchairs, the prescriber must be present on day of delivery
No Trial will occur upon delivery. If the prescriber deems the equipment is not suitable, it can be swapped for another readily available item in the same category
Purchased on request
  • Purchased from the NSW Health government contract list as required or can be purchased from a quote
  • The equipment will be delivered to the older person’s home by the equipment supplier
  • Includes specific accessories for some equipment
  • Includes low vision AT
  • Includes falls alarms/sensor mats for the bed, chair or floor
  • Excludes personal alarms/emergency response systems, as they are not provided through the trial. For these items, contact the client's Home Care Package provider for alternative funding options
Recommended It is the prescriber’s responsibility to ensure the item (once delivered) is suitable for the person.
Pre-approval
  • Additional prescriber input/clinical justification is required to ensure safety for these types of equipment
  • More cost-effective solutions may be suitable to meet clinical need
  • NSW Health government contract equipment must be considered in the first instance
  • For scooters, prescribers must conduct assessment of person’s safety and suitability to use the scooter upon delivery with the supplier present

Prior to contacting the EnableNSW team, please have the following information ready:

  • person’s diagnosis,
  • functional status and current issues,
  • current equipment in place
  • goals and clinical reasoning for AT prescription, and
  • reason equipment options from readily available or purchased on request categories are not clinically suitable.

There are two ways to start the pre-approval process.

  1. Call EnableNSW on 1800 362 253 (option 9) and ask to speak with a clinical advisor. Please ensure you have the required information ready to discuss (first column). If approved, an email containing the pre-approval number and preferred suppliers will be sent to you.

    OR
  2. Complete the pre-approval enquiry. The information provided will be reviewed, and if approved, an email containing the pre-approval number and preferred suppliers will be sent to you.

Step by step guide to completing an application

  • Step 1: Complete assessment of client’s AT needs as per usual process.
  • Step 2: Review AT Loans Scheme Guidelines and online AT equipment catalogue.
  • Step 3: Select readily available equipment. This equipment will have a banner for easy reference.
    • Where readily available does not meet the older person’s clinical need, you may choose purchased on request or pre-approval equipment. See the table above for information, including the steps involved in the pre-approval process.
  • Step 4: Complete and submit online application form, including the SKUID, contract or quote number to ensure the correct equipment has been selected. Please note you will need to provide the person’s Aged Care ID.
  • Step 5: At delivery, follow up with the client to confirm the correct equipment has been delivered and is suitable for their needs.
